Over 100 western Movies have filmed in an darund Kanab. Starting with Tom Mix in 1924, John Wayne, Robert Taylor, Clark Gable, Joel McCrea, Ben Johnson, Barbara Stanwick, Jane Russell, Virginia Mayo, and many more western legends have all made Kanab their destination for movie making. Many television shows such as: Wagon Train, Death Valley Days, Gunsmoke, How the West was Won and many, many more. Original movie sets still stand in Kanab Canyon, Pahreah River, and Johnson Canyon that you may visit. Movies were also filmed at Three Lakes and Moqui Cave. So ya’ll keep your eyes open when traveling through Kanab. Ya never know who you might see. Some of these “Little Hollywood” hero stars have even stayed at this very hotel during the spectacular Western Legends Round-up. The annual Western Legends Round-up began in 1999 and has brought cowboys and western lovers from all over the world to this small town. The three-day event includes the Little Hollywood Film Festival featuring western movie stars (our Little Hollywood Heroes) which have included: Clint Walker, Buck Taylor, James Drury, Robert Horton, Ruth Buzzi, and Cheryl Rogers-Barnett. There is also a wagon train that travels across the county, Dutch-oven cook-offs, mountain men rendevous, action shooting, high noon long-horn cattle drive parade, live entertainment, food, crafts, a fiddle festival, western art, cowboy poetry and much, much more. Five miles north of Kanab in Angel’s Canyon resides the home of thousands of rescued animals at the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. This no-kill clinic is one of the biggest in the country and well-known throughout the world. Volunteers travel thousands of miles for the opportunity to contribute to the mission of the great non-profit organization. One of its latest rescues included all of the abandoned and injured dogs and cats victimized by Hurricane Katrina. There is a plethora of recreation activities in the beautiful outdoors of southern Utah and northern Arizona. There is world-class hunting on the Paunsaugunt Plateau and fishing at Lake Powell. Biking is a popular past-time in this beautiful area. ATV and 4x4 riding are available throughout all the old dirt roads and the Hog Canyon. There are also 4x4 tours available that take you to those unique and less-seen slot canyons and land formations. Boat tours and river running for the water enthusiasts are accessible for Lake Powell and the Colorado River. There is camping available for those perfect nights at the Ponderosa Grove Campground, at the Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park, Whitehouse Campground, and throughout the local BLM lands. The area is a hiker’s haven with millions of acres to explore that consist of slot canyons, red mesas, eerie hoodoos and pinnacles, ancient rock art, swirling sandstone, and ancient seabeds. The adventurous may also choose to enjoy rock climbing or repelling. If you would rather “cowboy up” then enjoy horseback riding through the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument or Jacob Lake. During the winter visitors may pass through on their way to the Brian Head Ski Resort for excellent skiing and snow boarding. If you would prefer a more relaxed atmosphere there are two golf courses, one in Kanab and another at Mt. Carmel Junction, set in a unique outdoor environment and pretty parks for picnicking. Kanab is the centered between miles of public lands. To the North are pink hoodoos of Bryce Canyon National Park and Cedar Breaks National Monument, the plant and wildlife (including elk and mule deer) of the Dixie National Forest, and the sandstone chimneys of the Kodachrome Basin State Park. To the East lies 1.7 million rugged acres of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument with its Grosvenor Arch, the fun boating and exploring of the Glen Canyon Recreation Area, and the primitive beauty and unique geology of the Paria Canyon-Vermillion Cliffs Wilderness Area with its famous North Coyote Buttes (“the Wave”). In the South is the spectacular North Rim of the Grand Canyon National Park, the unique California Condors of the Kapirowitz plateau, and the gorgeous Kaibab National Forest. And to the West is the heavenly Zion National Park with its towering cliffs and beautiful narrows, the historic Pipe Springs National Monument, and splendid Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park. |
